Crowns, also known as "caps", are permanent coverings fitted over each individual tooth to strengthen or improve their appearance. They are undeniably advantageous to dental health when used to restore a tooth that is unable to support a large filling, attach bridges, protect or restore fractured teeth, cover discolored or disfigured teeth, or cover dental implants.

Fitting a crown is determined by the location of the tooth to be crowned, the amount of remaining tooth structure available, the presence of an implant and its connecting abutment, the evidence of grinding or clenching, and the transparency of the existing teeth.
